Glass ceramics are composite materials made from both glass and crystalline phases. They are produced from a glass melt, but unlike traditional glass, the crystallization process is intentionally controlled to promote crystal growth. The coefficient of thermal expansion in glass ceramics can be precisely adjusted to specific requirements by modifying the ratio between the glass and crystal phases.
Glass ceramic materials can be machined with extremely high precision and, unlike metals, exhibit no dimensional changes when subjected to temperature variations. In addition, glass ceramic components offer excellent thermal shock resistance and are characterized by very high mechanical strength. Typical applications include high-tech fields such as precision metrology, precision optics, laser technology, astronomy, and IC/LCD lithography. Glass ceramic parts are used, for example, in the form of laser gyroscopes, optical mirrors, telescope mirrors, and scaled substrates.
